Bunions

BUNIONS

A natural approach – no orthotics, no surgery, no medication

What are Bunions?

Bunions are an abnormal bony growth that most commonly occurs at the 1st metatarsal joint which is at the base of the big toe joint. They can also appear at the base of the 5th toe joint, commonly known as a Tailor’s bunion.

What causes Bunions?

The principle cause of bunions is poor foot posture and biomechanical dysfunction where there has been excessive loading or pressure on the big toe joint during gait. Genetic factors and inappropriate footwear also contribute to the cause of bunions. Some of the common conditions that affect the biomechanics of the foot that causes bunions include:

  • Hypermobile joints
  • Excessive foot pronation
  • Rheumatoid Arthritis
  • Abducted Gait – Out-toed gait (duck footed)
  • Neuromuscular disease

How to fix Bunions naturally, without Surgery?

The best way to fix bunions is to fix the cause, .... which is the biomechanical problem. Have a look at this Bunion post for further examples. Foot Posture Centre podiatrists will first of all assess your condition and will work through and locate any joints that have collapsed or misaligned. They will then mobilise those joints to realign them to their correct position. You will be given a series of exercises that will help restore movement and strengthen the bunion joint as well as the whole foot and lower leg. To have any chance of seeing even a minor reversal of the bunion and a reduction of the symptoms associated with it, it's essential that the internal misalignments of the foot and leg are addressed.  Failing to do this results in poor outcomes.  Pain associated with this condition is readily resolved using the natural techniques used by podiatrists at the Foot Posture Centre.  What is more difficult is reducing the bony growth and severe deviations of the toe. In these difficult cases, surgery may be required to slow down and stop the deterioration of the bunion deformity.  However, having a check up by our podiatrists to see if natural bunion correction is possible is highly recommended before going down the surgery option.

Bunions Natural Treatment

Unfortunately most health practitioners and even podiatrists will recommend foot orthotics as the first mode of treatment. While foot orthotics may help resolve the pain, you will need to constantly wear them to receive the benefit, thereby limiting footwear options. The other concern with constantly wearing foot orthotics is that they have a tendency to make your feet lazy or weak, further increasing your dependency on them.

Most cases of Bunion pain can be resolved without orthotics, medication or surgery. See an example of Bunion Treatment & Correction through a natural approach. Our recommendation would be to have your bunions assessed by podiatrists at the Foot Posture Centre to determine if your particular bunion problem can be resolved naturally, drug-free, orthotic free and surgery free.  Call our centres at Forest Hill 9877 0056 or Ivanhoe 9499 2006 for your appointment.
