Claw Toes

CLAW TOES

A natural approach – no orthotics, no surgery, no medication

What are Claw Toes?

Claw toes are where the toes of the foot are curled up in a flexed position and may be rigid or flexible. Claw toes are often seen in highly arched feet (Cavus foot types) and in some neuromuscular disorders. Often all of the lesser toes (2-5) are affected, as compared to hammer toes which normally only affects one or two digits. Metatarsalgia (Ball of foot pain) is a frequent complaint with this condition. This is because as the toes retract and claw, further pressure is applied to the ball of the foot.”

What causes Claw Toes

This often occurs when there is an imbalance between the intrinsic and extrinsic muscles of the foot causing the flexor muscles of the foot to over tighten, forcing the toes into a contracted or curled up position. The muscle imbalance is often caused by abnormal biomechanics of the foot and leg as well as a restricted range of movement through the foot and ankle.

How to treat Claw Toes naturally

It is important to address the cause of claw toes and correct any muscle imbalance that is occurring. While a surgical approach may still be warranted for some severe rigid claw cases, reoccurrence of the condition may occur even after surgery. That is why correcting the cause is vital.

Often there are misaligned joints deep within the ankle complex that have pushed forward, combined with restricted movement in the ankle, midfoot and metatarsal region. Restoring quality movement and function are essential to a successful outcome with this difficult condition. The use of a metatarsal arch can also help to reduce the deformity and in cases where the claw toes are still flexible, it is advisable to gently mobilise those toes into extension to help minimise contracture.

“Check if your claw toes are rigid or flexible. Can you still flex and extend them?”

By having your claw toes assessed by our corrective Melbourne podiatrists we will be able to tell you if your condition is likely to improve with our natural corrective techniques. Avoid painful corns, surgery and bulky orthotics that limit the range of shoes that you can wear and book into one of our centres for a consultation.
